Websense Cost ?

Hi,

Thinking of moving from LEA filtering to Websense. Has anyone any idea of the cost? Is it per client or per user?

It is licensed per seat, client machine.

to give you an idea. I have just switched from websense to smoothwall Sg 2008. They wanted 8k for 350 clients !(student machines only) for 3 years... I got then down to 6k with a bit of negotiation.. But ended up going with smoothwall for half the cost for all of my client machines over the same time period. Cant deny websense is a good product but their educational pricing is really a joke (10% initially). If you do go with them make sure you haggle as they now seem to have movement on pricing unlike a few years ago.

Maybe they are now a bit more keen to get into schools.. A potentially big market that they used to snub imo.

As tbh i heard that Web sense Prices were a joke as well.. :\

We're quite lucky, as we get our Websense server as part of our LEA deal. When I was looking at filtering options in my last job, the one that stood out was BLOXX Bloxx No Nonsense Web Filtering -- Products although I think it is also quite expensive.

I did look at bloxx also at the same time, pricing was just slightly more than websense which suprised me over 3yrs!

We have got websense and do all the internet filtering our selves. We can do it all for about £4500 a year, as we have just got another 3 year contract 500 users for just sort of £10000. If you want, PM me with details on anything you want to know. Its well better than LEA filtering. Take for example, we got an email from our LEA saying that can users not use the internet as much due to low bandwidth. All the IT dept laughed! Also, the websense support is very good. Ive got a few account managers i know of at websense so they might be able to help you out too.

Thanks for the kind comments guys. I think Websense are starting to clue-in to the fact that School budgets aren't even remotely similar to their corporate counterparts. Still, they have the acquisition of SurfControl to fund

I compared several products (including Websense) and opeted to go for the Smoothwall UTM appliance - this was cheaper than the software-only options of the other products!!!

 

The box works well and has a lovely little screen on the front to tell you system information

We've got 4 Bloxx boxes..heh..not bad at all, except that our domain (LEA wide) is so big that we've pushed it to breaking point several times and it's been rewritten a few as well.

 

We like volunteering to find bugs... Between Bloxx, PolicyCentral Enterprise and NSS, the kids here have given up trying..
