How to install E-marker 2.0(exam marker) .exe

I have noticed that there are a lot of network engineers/administrators struggling to install the exe version of e-marker 2.0 within the network environment, in short everyone thinks administrative privileges have to be used to get the program installed because the company who made the software advise to do so however, I have found a way around it.

 

How to install e-marker.exe 2.0 without administrative rights.

 

Step 1. download and install the e-marker onto a machine that is used by you - the admin, using administrative rights. ( this will create a folder named "DRS Data Service Limited" within your start menu with a "shortcut" inside of it called "e-Marker2®-e2-p-010".

step 2. right click "e-Marker2®-e2-p-010" and click on open file location.

step 3. copy "e-Marker2®-e2-p-010" and paste it into the C drive of the device which needs the application installed... ie, the teachers laptop for example.

step 4. head over to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" and Create a new folder called "DRS Data Service Limited"

step 5. within the folder paste the "e-Marker2®-e2-p-010" file

step 6. login to the teachers account on her machine, run "e-Marker2®-e2-p-010", this will prompt for an installation without needing administrative rights, the application will also not get deleted every time the pc is restarted.

step 7. enjoy life.

Interestingly I just had to deal with this. Installation went fine, with admin credentials, but it stopped working last night. After contacting their support who said it has to have admin rights, no ifs no buts, I ran the program as an admin, logged in as the teacher, then ran the program as normal and whatever the issue was went away. I think either an update was causing issues or there is a time limit for check-in.

Sure they use to say in there website they recommend this isn't installed on a work device and the user should use a none networked personal device or along them line.

yeah they've told us the same thing just yesterday but pressure from management made us find a work around to get it to work without giving out admin rights so we thought it would be wise to share it with the world as there are some threads that are still looking for a solution.

As an update, I found that our issue was actually that the Start Menu shortcut is specially crafted and I think contains the server address. The user was running it from the task bar after it was pinned and that was what was failing.

 

This may be a different version as it looks like this is the History papers and uses a different interface than then other AQA papers!

I've had this with a science teacher. Got it installed, but it can't reach the server on login. Tried mentioning the shortcut's server configuration and the like to their support but no luck.

we used smoothwall to find the specific domains that need unblocking for the application to function, i recommend you use wireshark to find what domain needs to be unblocked as i suspect your firewall is blocking it

Where can I download the application from? I'm having a lot of issues with the setup.exe installing into C:\Users...

This is a dotnet clickonce app. I am really not sure why this sort of problem isn't pre-solved by Visual Studio's default build process. Users not being admin is hardly uncommon within the set of users who might need to run one of these things.

 

The other gotcha (this year) is they (AQA/DRS) changed their signing certs. So if you have a publisher rule in Applocker, you'll need to update it by digging out the actual exe post install (buried in the appdata\local\apps\2.0\..... folder. Check your applocker event logs for the correct path).
