Is there any difference in functionality between the staff and student licenses?

If I assigned a student license, to say, an MDSA who accesses the computers a few times a year for training is anyone going to notice?

Look at https://m365maps.com/ for guidance.

A Student Use Benefit A3 licence does not have a Windows Server CAL as the Faculty licence does.

The service & features table here also shows the different between staff/student:

I'm really not seeing any noticeable difference - I assume the server CAL is only a CAL for on prem? We don't have anything on-prem any more, that's the whole point!

I don't know if it applies to the A3 as well, but for A1 the Student/Faculty licenses are used by Teams/SDS to determine who's allowed to "own"/be teacher for a class team.

That would sort of make sense - nobody I'd assign a student benefit to would need to own a team. In fact, some of them, it would be an advantage if they couldn't!
