Apple School Manager - creating new users - this managed apple id is taken

Hi,

I am just creating some new Apple School Manager teacher accounts and the last one gives me the error - this managed apple id is taken.

Iit turns out The teacher logged into an iPad using their school email.

Anything I can do to add that account to ASM?

I suppose I could create a email alias and use that.

On a side note: Under the Apple ID section, I am just entering the users email address, but noticed it does have another pull down that also lists .appleid.com

Should I be selecting

default = [email protected]

or

pull down = [email protected]

Whats the actual difference and why do I have a choice?

Cheers

When ASM launched you could only create managed apple ids that took the domain name @appleid.domain.com. Over time this has evolved and they now allow you to take ownership of a domain such as your school domain. This now allows you to create Apple IDs using your domain name and not @appleid.domain.com. It's possible this user setup a Consumer Apple ID before you got round to creating a Managed Apple ID.

You can setup federation within in ASM so users that sign into iCloud with their google/azure accounts automaticlly have a managed apple ID created. Seting up Federation will also email anyone that has created a consumer apple ID with an email address associated to your domain and ask them to update their apple id.

unfortunately federation might not be an option. I tried to set this up, its not that hard but it gave an error, so I contacted Apple support who couldn't get it working and then I contacted Google Support, who also couldn't workout the issue. Both Apple & Google were saying it was an issue with the other party. Both remoted on with me more than once. This went on for months before I gave up.

For the Apple ID that has already been taken if the teacher logs in and changes the email address associated with the account you'll then be able to use the original email address as the managed Apple ID. Without enabling Federation which will take back the Apple ID after 60 days this is the only way of getting it back.

Looks like I missed something, I am now doing exactly the same and I get this error, has it been fixed? or am I doing something wrong?

In the end I just created an email alias for that user in our Google system and used that alias as the ASM account.
