Onedrive software

Has anybody ever experienced issues with the onedrive software sync deleting local files, stating that they are "available" online through onedrive, when they are not? One member of staff has lost an entire folder of work today which has seemingly just disappeared. The Folder its self has uploaded to onedrive, but the contents of the folder have not synced/uploaded. Onedrive seems to have removed the local version of the files. I have since pushed out a GPO to disable Onedrive completely as this has deeply concerned me...

 

Checked recycle bin both on the PC and One drive, nothing.

 

I am currently running some file recovery software (recuva), hoping that it will find the missing files..

What type of files were they?

I have not seen this happening myself, its even weirder the site collection recycle bin didnt have it.

Apart from when Windows 10 went through a phase of deleteing user profiles during monthly updates (and any data that wasn't redirected) a few years ago, no not seen this. However 99% of the time a folder is empty and there is nothing showing in the various recycle bins the issue for us has been the user *moved* the files instead. That the SharePoint/OneDrive recycle bin is empty suggests to me that they have been moved on the local file system to somewhere still within scope of the sync of the site's folders.

 

That said, there is something in your phrasing that makes me ask: When did these files get put into that folder, and when did that folder get put into OneDrive?

I have not seen this happening myself, its even weirder the site collection recycle bin didnt have it.

 

Just general folders containing PDF's, Word Docs, Excel worksheets etc.. Yes very strange, first time I have come across this. Seems like something had gone wrong with the cloud sync and misplaced local files somehow. Managed to recover them all in the end. Still leaving onedrive desktop disabled - staff can use the web version from now on. Don't want this to happen again for whatever reason.

We are seeing something similar where users have local data, use the sync function in either OneDrive or SharePoint and it claims to have completed sync and all the folders are there but lots of files aren't.

The staff member did say that they used the sync function in the software. That seems like what has happened here too, but also somehow removed the local files (had to use recovery software to find the files. luckily got them all back.)

 

Put me right off using OneDrive desktop software now.

The only occasion we had something similar was a user copying a folder over to Sharepoint. This copied the folders but was missing a lot of the files.

 

It didn't get rid of the local files though and I think we put it down to the fact he had copied it during the day Microsoft had a lot of outages.

 

My guess in your case is the folder was cut/pasted into onedrive sync, either then turned off or it bugged during the copy? Unless you automatically back up to onedrive I don't see how it could have lost the local files unless it was cut/pasted into onedrive.

I'm not 100% sure what exactly happened, forgot to mention that it was on the users laptop & this was also done at home through a SSL VPN to our network. There must have been a connection problem during the sync which in turn caused these problems to occur - doesn't explain the fact that it removed the local files though. Or stated that the files were "available online" when they were not.
