Upgrading 27" 2015 iMacs to Solid state drives.

We're currently facing a bit of a challenge with our 2015 27" iMacs. They're running painfully slow with 1tb fusion drives, and unfortunately, we can't afford to replace them with new iMacs right now. We have decided to go down the upgrade route and fit new SSDs and additional ram. The only issue we're encountering is that these iMacs are quite difficult to take apart. We've tried to do it ourselves, but we've already accidentally cracked two screens in the process. So, we were wondering if anyone could recommend a reputable company in London that could help us with the labour needed for this task? We'd really appreciate any suggestions or advice. Is it the screens covers that have cracked, or the screens themselves? The covers are an absolute swine - broken two myself. Toughened glass with no real protection on the edges.

 

I just used suction cups on ours. Replacement covers from Ebay.

It's the glass that's cracked, but the glass and LCD panel is fused in to one unit with the iMac's from 2015. Unfortunately we can't just replace the glass, and an entirely new display outweighs the value of the whole Mac, (£500!)

Other than those local 'repair shops' like 'iSmash', I dont know of any companies that'll do this.

 

I upgraded 30 iMacs a couple years ago. After I broke the first two, I went and bought a heat gun to loosen the glue, and a proper suction lifter from screwfix to lift the glass away (the ones desiged for glass windows). Only cost around £25 total and i still use them today. They then made light work on removing the glass on the rest. Just remember to glue or use double sided tape to secure the glass back on.

 

The tip i always give to anyone doing this job is do not pry the edges of the glass - You'll guarentee it to crack. Just heat the glue with a heatgun or hairdryer, run a thin knife around the edges, and using the suction lifter, pull the glass away from the frame. If its not budging, use more heat around the edges. They usually lift out from the top first. Be patient with it, and youll be fine.

I actually done a training course with these guys a few years ago as well and spent some time with the guy who was then the workshop manager, they are pretty decent people when I last spoke to them.

Was going to say the screens can crack, had a company do about 20 of ours and one cracked but they replaced the screen afterwards https://www.counterpoint.co.uk/

Nice part is they came on site and did everything as part of a refresh including their custom AD integration solution which has worked perfectly for years now.
