Can't use the letter "p" on the lock screen!

Yes, I can log in thanks to an old super user post but I'm baffled by the cause. I swapped keyboards, then I used the on screen keyboard and nothing! I can't use the letter "p"

 

I unplugged all USB devices (not the 2nd keyboard by itself) and still no... I ended up (as suggested by a superuser) using alt+112 phew! I can log in.

 

I can't get it to work any other way... ideas?

 

I did check both keyboards for a stuck windows key but the win+p combo for screen config also does not work at the lock screen.

Try pressing every additional key multiple times, ALT, CTRL, SHIFT, Windows key. Windows just sometimes decide one of those is pressed and a good repeated tapping reminds it that the key isn't pressed.

I did try the onscreen keyboard only.. Also the onscreen keyboard would show any of the modifier keys active.

 

I'm baffled!

I've had it before where the onscreen keyboard didn't indicate it.

 

The only other option is if a weird keyboard mode is in operation and it thinks the P key is an arrow or something. Like some of the short keyboards, or laptop keyboards.

I've seen it before where a key being pressed while the screen is being locked will stop working on the lockscreen until the machine is restarted, no idea why though.

We've had this! Seem to remember its something to do with the Keyboard drivers........ try a different usb port...

lol funnily had a "P" problem here too! Came to light when the user struggled with my basic instruction of Windows + P to duplicate... every time he hit P it caused his computer to be very slow to respond.

 

He swapped keyboard out - same issue. I advised him to restart & that fixed it.... random!

We have had similar to this a few times and it was because they had somehow managed to set the logon keyboard as Slovakian or similar rather than UK. Had to go into the depths of the keyboard settings in control panel or settings and remove all random extra keyboard layouts so that only the UK one remains, then it worked again.
