LeMarchand Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 My HTPC was getting old and tired, so I upgraded most of the innards and cloned the old SSD to a new M2 drive. The only problem is that I can't get Windows (10 Pro, updated from 8 bought back when MS let you buy Windows via a "Home Use" program). I keep getting errors while trying to sign in with my MS account, and so can never get to the bit where they let me talk to someone. Any ideas? Trying to avoid close to £200 for a new key!

Boredguy Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 If you had purchased a retail copy of Windows originally, you could have moved it to the new hardware, but that old scheme was basically along the lines of OEM and tied the licence to the Motherboard Bios (hence you never need to reauthenticate if you did a fresh install) Amazon does have a W10 Home Licence & USB key pack listed for about £90 that appears to be genuine as a OEM product. 1

Thanks . I'll have to look into the differences between Home and Pro. Anyone know how "networky" Home is? I currently sync/access folders across my home network and use RDP to access the HTPC from my desk. I do have a unused W7 pack, but I suspect that would mean installing 7 (if possible) then going to 8/10/11 rather than just using the key.
Boredguy Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 File Share access works fine in Windows Home, I've got it on all 3 of my stations to move stuff around. You can still create local users for permissions to stuff so you don't have to rely on MS accounts. RDP might be lacking, but I just use VNC to do the same 1
