You've heard of elf on the shelf. Now get ready for...

The Royal Mint's answer:

Ok, ok, let's put you out of your misery!

It's... Sovereign on a Sovereign

*Other solutions (that actually rhyme) may be available...

That might be difficult to read (I didn't want to make the image too large) so:

You’ve heard of Elf on the Shelf, now here’s…

(EDIT: This post has reached our friends across the pond and confused some people. So, in the UK (where this character was created), we call this elusive fellow ‘Wally’, not ‘Waldo’. There’s your clue…)

(SECOND EDIT: in the UK we call a device for wheeling and transporting books about a ‘trolley’, not a ‘cart’. It’s almost as if we’re located in England 😅)

(THIRD EDIT: Dear people not in the UK. It seems this post has gone beyond our little island. We are a library based in Norfolk, England. In the UK he is called Wally. In the UK he is on a trolley. He is a Wally on a Trolley. Wally and Trolley rhyme, and the joke makes sense to almost 70 million people. Also the author is English, and he was called Wally first. Thank you for coming to our TED talk, thank you for all the comments 😂)

(FOURTH and hopefully final EDIT: Australia and New Zealand have joined the chat and are pro-Wally and Trolley. Shoutouts to our buddies in Ireland too. It’s been genuinely hilarious going through the replies, there are too many comments to keep up with (I mean technically admin is still on Christmas leave), so all we’ll say is PLEASE keep comments nice and civil in this increasingly important and topical debate. It’s just for fun, and we love you whether you think this is Wally, Waldo, Charlie, Walter, Holger, Vallu - whatever. We’re just pleased our boss is going to be delighted with the engagement numbers 😂)
