Veeam Failures

Has anyone had this error on Veeam when trying to backup VM's? It occurs randomly, it can backup fine for days and then fail for a couple of days and then start working again.

 

"Failed to create VM recovery checkpoint (mode: Crash consistent) Details: Failed to create VM recovery checkpoint. Failed to call wmi method 'CreateSnapshot'. Wmi error: '32775'"

That error just says HyperV is failing to make a snapshot so normally wouldn’t be directly Veeam related.

 

Can you manually make a snapshot in HyperV without it failing?

 

Could be a few things like VMMS service stuck, lack of HDD space for the snapshots (shadow copy wise etc)

 

You’d normally have better logs showing in event viewer regarding why the snap shot failed (as in windows events)

I used to have to restart the VSS service regularly to keep Veam happy - I made a scheduled task to do it each day at a convenient time.

 

Edit, I still have to do it with my current n-able backup, but it's roughly once a month now, rather than daily!

I haven't used Veeam with Hyper-V, but on VMware when I got errors like this a reboot of the target server usually solved the issue.

Yes doing a manual snapshot works fine and there is enough space available. I have just tried restarting the VSS service on the Veeam server and then ran the job again and it succeeded but that may be a coincidence i'm not sure. It's strange because it may fail one day but succeed the next without anything changing.

Not with Veeam but have had similar with Altaro before now. Was down to un-deletable broken checkpoints in the tree.

 

Manually tidying them up in various ways straightened it out again.
