Echo 5

Hi all,

 

Have an admin manager at school who wants to setup an Echo 5. It doesn't work through the Smoothwall firewall onsite as it is not setup to bypass the firewall. He is adamant he wants it setting up.

 

Anyone else out there had such requests ?

Ask him to fill out a cost/benefit analysis comparing your time to what he's using it for, and a GDPR form for sending things people say in the school to Amazon.

 

That'll give you at least 12 months to get it working.

 

But in general there's no way to set a proxy on such things, so you'd need a non filtered network, or a list of domains to allowlist, just for starters.

 

Then there may be no discovery if you block mDNS on your wifi

What is the users usage case?

Where does he want to use it because if it is near students you'll need consent from all the parents that their kids voices can be uploaded to Amazon, and consent from any nearby staff too.

I would reject this with 3 justifications

 

1) - It requires a *personal* amazon account to use, which the school has no control over. Any audio recordings the school can't access or delete.

2) - It doesn't support enterprise Wi-Fi standards

3) - It requires you to open large amounts of firewall ports with little to no education justification.

 

I think you need to establish the educational business case here first tho as they likely don't have one - Especially as it's an admin manager and not a member of teaching staff asking for one.

If they come up with some "justification" of voice commands - what about the phone app on their personal device (assuming they are in a private office etc.)?
