Extracting the Cups Drivers on Ubuntu 7.10

Hello again,

 

I am currently still going through the Installation guide for Cups, Samba, Kerberos and PyKota as written by Ric_.

 

I think it's going OK although i have now run into a situation that i am a little unsure about. This is how to extract the CUPS drivers into the correct folder as mentioned here:

 

* Extract the following files from the CUPS Driver package to /usr/share/cups/drivers:

o cups6.inf

o cups6.ini

o cups6.ppd

o cupsps6.dll

o cupsui6.dll

 

* Copy the following files from a Windows installation to /usr/share/cups/drivers:

o ps5ui.dll

o pscript.hlp

o pscript.ntf

o pscript5.dll

 

I am using Ubuntu 7.10. The package is in the .RPM format which this version of Ubuntu can't seem to recognise. I have downloaded alien and converted the package to a .deb package but now i am unsure as to what to do next. Can i just install the packe as normal or do i need to do this a different way?

The cups6.ppd is missing. Is this OK or is it required. I will be printing through the CUPS system from OS X as well?

OK i have moved on from the drivers thanks to Geoff.

 

I have now got to the point that if i try to change the ownership on the /etc/samba/drivers to the administrator:"domain admins". i get an error returned which says

 

chown: `administrator:domain admins': invalid group

 

I don't know why. When i run the wbinfo -g the groups are returned as does the getent group command. I can obtain a ticket using kinit administrator and i can list them with klist. What could be the problem?

 

Could it be something to do with the winbind error i have. When i run the testparm i get a winbind seperator error. The winbind error seems to do with the slash being seen as an escape character and thus removing the carriage return and placing the next line on the same line as the separator option.

I have since run a command found in the installation guide thread at the top of the *nix section:

 

getent group | grep "Domain Admins"

 

This did not return anything. Now I'm stumped as to why as the group definitely exists. I continued reading and found ICTNUT had the same issue as i have now where wbinfo -g could not find the domain admins group either.

 

But it does not state what he did to resolve the issue.

Did you alter /etc/nsswitch.conf to list winbind as a data source for passwd and group info?

ok, that looks ok. Does 'wbinfo -g' work?

Yeah, i think it works OK:

 

wbinfo -g | grep "domain admins"
domain admins

I run this and it returns:

 

getent group | grep "domain admins"
domain admins:x:10017:stopit,admin,kshilton,administrator

So everything is working then.

Well i would of thought so too but when i try to chown -R adminsitrator:"domain admins" /etc/samba/drivers it comes back with a failure saying invalid group.

I had this the other day but couldn't be bothered with. As a work around I did:

 

chown -R administrator:administrator /etc/samba/drivers

This also comes back with invalid group.

 

chown -R administrator:administrator /etc/samba/drivers/
chown: `administrator:administrator': invalid group

Have you tried using the group/user numbers? rather than the names?

administrator:*:11260:10004:Administrator:/home/CARRHILL/administrator:/bin/bash

 

11260 is the uid of administrator here.

 

 

root@hermes:/usr/share/cups/drivers# getent group | grep "domain admin"
domain admins:x:10004:ctx_configmgr,zimbra,emlibuser1,sweepupd,gking,manager

 

10004 is domain admins here. Makes sense, if you look above it conicides with the default posix group for the administrator.

 

Thus:

 

chown -R 11260:10004 /somewhere/

 

does the same job as:

 

chown -R "administrator":"domain admins" /somewhere/

quick work around:

 

chgrp administrator /var/../.. && chmod 750 /var/../..

Ok. I tried the group an duser numbers and it accepted the command but it returned:

 

mark@ubuntu:~$ sudo chown -R 10000:10017 /etc/samba/drivers/
[sudo] password for mark:
chown: cannot access `/etc/samba/drivers/': No such file or directory

 

What is supposed to be in the /samba/drivers folder as mine is missing?

 

Have i forgot to install a package when installing SAMBA?

If you know there's meant to be something in there, do the following:

 

shell: updatedb

shell: locate filename

 

and it should point to the correct location of the file.
