Acer TravelMate B118 (DfE E-Waste)

Hi folks,

 

Did anyone else end up with TravelMate B118's from the DfE get help with technology scheme?

 

Our allocation was plentiful so we ended up with around 60x 8th Gen iPads (saved us replacing all of Y6's 2nd Gen iPad Mini's woohoo).

I ordered 60 of the Lenovo 300e Chromebooks which have been a fantastic little bit of kit! However, we only ended up with 30 odd Lenovo's and got lumped with 30 odd Acer TravelMate B118s.

These TravelMate's are woeful, has anyone actually got them working happily? and for an extended period of time? For me they take an eternity just to open up Microsoft Edge, 100% CPU usage from startup :faint:Complete E-Waste.

 

 

I think I'll have to install Chrome OS Flex on to these, as it's a Godsend! Our 10+ Year old Satellite Pro's are still going strong with Chrome OS installed over the last 3 years! luckily our school has kept the pupil's on Google Workspace.

 

If anyone comes across an Acer TravelMate as a gift, freebie, hand me down, in a skip... avoid them like the plague!

It's important to note that this is a dual core machine. All low power consumption dual core machines are unusable for Windows 10.

 

The Acer TravelMate B3 on the other hand, with a quad core CPU is a great little machine and I would recommend them to people who need a basic *Windows* device, something a little more versatile than a Chromebook, but in the same price bracket. I've even seen them run Photoshop (not particularly well, but better than not having it at all).

 

A lot of good models got really bad reputations through the government programme, because they shipped with dual core CPUs when no IT Manager would have ever chosen that specification. I've got a shelf of HP, Lenovo, Asus devices that are next to useless. We also have some quad core variants of the same models and it is like night and day.

we have the TravelMate B311-31 and they're decent enough as a very basic mini laptop with quad core N4120 CPU , battery life is good and they can charge themselves from their USB-C port which I like

Perhaps use them as a raised mouse mat? Give them to the PE department to use as frisbees? Strap one to each foot next time it snows?
