HDD Health Software

Has anyone ever actually had any hard drive health software actually work and be accurate and warn about failing drives?

Over the weekend had a family member who came back to their computer, said Hard disk failure and no longer would boot. tried multiple times to revive the drive but failed to boot still.

The drive wasn't spinning but you could hear it trying to spin like it was stuck.

As last resort, A few hits of the drive against the desk powered off and on, kicked it back into life, it spun up and it booted and could have recovered the data if needed to but had a backup.

Just out of curiosity attached as secondary drive to PC and it spun up first time.

Crystal mark shows no errors, that all is good, and health is GOOD.

77517 power on hours - yes the machine is 10 years old with a Hitachi 500GB SATA original drive. Just fitted an SSD and reinstalled windows to give a new life. i3 machine.

Never found any software that reports accurately! The drives just die without warning in all my IT life!

I think depending on what manufacturer you are using, dell etc they have a diagnostics tool which does a accurate test on the hdd.
