Hi all,

I'm really struggling here. Our SLT would like a couple of chaplains we have to be able to log in to SIMS .net, view student's very basic details (names, DOB, pronouns, probably about it), and see their timetable so they can go find them in a lesson for a chat. I just can't get it to work. I can't see an appropriate builtin group, and picking your own bits is an absolute minefield!

Anyone any ideas please?

Thank you

Stuart

My suggestion would be to copy a group that *nearly* matches what you want, name it SchoolInitials-Chaplains and in the description put the purpose and the group you copied from.

Now remove permissions from the custom group (and test after each permissions) until you get as close as you can. Download the SIMS permissions spreadsheet to use as a reference (available from the ESS support site)

I'd probably start with Class teacher and whittle back from there. When testing permissions don't provide too much access, remember to test from the search box as well.

But before you begin, I'd scope how many students are affected and whether there's another way. We (for example) publish student timetables to their Outlook calendars so it's fairly easy to see where they should be from Outlook.

Thanks for this. I'll go Class Teacher as you suggest and wind it in. I usually like to be most restrictive and then loosen permissions if needed, but I'm going to have to give slightly broader and then tighten this time by the looks of it.

I usually find this spreadsheet very useful, but not on this occasion! It states that an external auditor can do what I want. They can't. There were other oddities too...
