Hyper V Migration

Hi all,

 

Hope you are well.

 

I am moving our print server across to a new host by exporting and importing the VM.

 

When I do this, I get the following error message-

 

Hyper v encountered an error during the import operation

 

Server failed to realise virtual machine id

 

This error message occurs hours after the importing the VM in Hyper v has started

 

Any ideas in how to overcome this error, please?

Any chance you could confirm the error please? I have never seen that error message before.

So you say it can actually start and work for several hours before you get that error?

When you imported the vm did you restore using the same guid or create a new one ? Think it’s the middle option

 

Also does the account your using have the correct permissions to modify the folder your restoring to ?

 

Also what version did you export the vm from (host os)

Thank you for the response.

 

I picked the middle option, which was restore.

 

I have checked permissions and it seems to have the correct permissions.

 

The server OS I did the export from is server 2012 r2

I’m not 100 % but it could be that you might have needed to upgrade the configuration version of the vm

 

What version is it ? I presume your vm is still OK?

 

I mean you could try building a new vm and just copy the vhdx exported version and see if it boots

Apologies, I didn't get back to you sooner. It was a permissions problem. I suffered a brain fart thinking I added the permissions, but I didn't.
