Does anyone know how to manage the right click on start menu on Win11? On Win10 I had a GPO that hid shortcuts in C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\winX\ depending on what we wanted users to see. That doesn't appear to be working on Win11, although the folders still exist.

Windows 11 does it a little different to Windows 10. Just spent a fun half an hour with process monitor and this is how it works:

 

- Checks c:\users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX for shortcuts in the Group1/Group2/Group3 folders

- Checks c:\users\default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX for shortcuts in the Group1/Group2/Group3 folders

 

So if you delete the ones you don't want out of both locations, the menu will behave as expected. (If you're testing this on a PC you will need to kill/re-load explorer.exe to make it update)

I've got this working - a computer GPO to hide the Group2 and Group3 folders in the default user location, and a user GPO at student or staff level to hide both for students and just group3 for staff in the %username% location works perfectly. All I have to do now is prevent the right click menu on pinned items - anyone have any ideas? Edited August 15, 2022 by clareq
