Trying to install VMware-workstation-6.0.4-93057 onto gentoo, using the included vmware-install.pl script. But it's asking something Im not sure about and cant seem to find an answer for.

oasis vmware-distrib # perl vmware-install.pl

Installing VMware Workstation.

In which directory do you want to install the binary files?

[/usr/bin]

What is the directory that contains the init directories (rc0.d/ to

rc6.d/)?

Its the 2nd question i dunno the answer for. I put /etc/init.d/ but thats not right... Anyone offer a suggestion plz?

Are you trying to install it by hand? If so, emerge it instead -- it's in app-emulation. That one should have all the defaults set up right.

yeh, Ive got a newer version than is in portage. But I guess thatll need to do, much simpler, thanks.

Although,

!! app-emulation/vmware-workstation-5.5.6.80404 has fetch restriction turned on.

!!! This probably means that this ebuild's files must be downloaded

!!! manually. See the comments in the ebuild for more information.

The ebuild tree has 6.x available, they're just keyworded ~arch. They also have a more intelligible message to tell you to download the vmware tarball yourself, which is what that is saying.

AFAIK gentoo uses System V (/etc/init.d) but the levels are named, not numbered. You'll have to create the appropriate symlinks for BSD (rc.x) directories, or the emerge installer will do this for you.

What I had to do was copy the tarball to the distfiles location, and add it /etc/portage/package.keywords

then there were a few dependencies that needed unmasked.

Think that should be it.
