HDMI Again! Fiber run and the fix...

We installed a £80 25meter fiber optic HDMI cable from CPC... Not a great experience.

 

So DEVICE, HDMI CABLE, PROJECTOR. it didn't always work, in the end as laptops would work 100% and the PC wouldn't we assumed that the PC had an iffy HDMI port or card, so we purchased a new graphics card....

 

Come the time to use a different laptop anddddd nope. No signal... other laptops yes not this one... F me.

its an HDMI repeater, really for copper cables.. but it fixed the issue. it uses USB power to BOOST the signal... I suspect the optical converter in the 25M cable needs ooompf that some HDMI ports can't provide.

Yep, we've had extensive problems with HDMI in one of our new builds with Promethean Panels. The fibre HDMI cables did work the best in the end. For hall installs we now use projector that support HDBase-T (HDMI over ethernet cabling) and then a HDBase-T Matrix by the PC/ Sources which is far more reliable. It's definitely cost prohibitive to fit in every classroom though.

If you can stick to Display Port - It is much less problematic.

 

I have also had HDMI issues with cables in the wall of loads of classrooms. Using a HDMI to Display Port cable from the faceplate to the computer fixed all the issues.

Ah - handy recomendation, thanks. I've just been looking this afternoon at someone who wants a TV mounted on a wall away from where their Sky box is plugged in, I was thinking it might be a bit far for plain HDMI. The solution I've bought for work is a pair of nice Blackmagic HDMI-to-SDI-to-HDMI dongles - they work very nicely, and can run signals for 50+ metres, but they're rather more pricy (£100-ish) than this handy-looking dongle.

The projector has an HDBase-t socket on the back but a £1500 matrix device seems a little pricey..

So I finally got around to ordering a couple of these and fully expected them to be the size of a house brick.

I was very pleased to find they are actually smaller than a matchbox!

 

In my scenario I was able to attach one to the top of a projector that's on the end of a 20m cable (which also has a 10m patch lead to the laptop) and it worked perfectly without needing the additional power cable plugged in.

 

Highly recommended.

Lindy's definitely the right place for this sort of requirement. They also provide USB cables for extended lengths too.
