Dell Chromebook 11 (3180) out of support already?

Blimey! Just noticed our Dell 3180 chromebooks we ordered back in 2019 are out of support entitlement this month.

 

What the heck? They're only just over 3 years old!!! I thought google allowed 5 years?

 

Tried contacting google but for some reason I don't have permission to create a case.

 

Anyone got any of these chromebooks with longer support dates on them?

The Dell 3180 Chromebook came out in February 2017. That's 5 years and 4 months.

All devices since 2020 have 8 years support now too by the way.

Unfortunately it's 5 years from launch, not purchase. Bit of a stinger.

Not really. You have 8 years of support time, preannounced. They will still work, they just won't be supported or get updates.

 

If a piece of kit survives education for more than 5 years, we should be carrying the manufacturer through the streets on our shoulders and offering them the keys to the town and city!

Sellers should be making it clear at the point of purchase how long a device is supported for, and shouldn't be selling devices with little time left.

If they don't, then shame on them.

Its also worth noting that the Chrome browser is being abstracted out or ChromeOS updates - so moving forward, while you won't get ChromeOS updates, you will still get Chrome updates. We are part of the trial of the "new" Lacros browser atm. I don't see how you're getting screwed over. The end of life information was published at the time of purchase.

 

It's not too different people who in recent years have purchased devices with out of date CPU and finding they aren't compatible with Windows 10. In fact it is better than that as they didn't get any warning at the time of purchase unlike the Chromebooks.

I think it's entirely reasonable to specify end of support dates based on launch date, but from my experience it's not very transparent and you need to know what you're looking for when you purchase. I'd expect an edu reseller to assist, but for the last Chromebook I purchased for personal use, the model on sale in John Lewis was one from 2019 with five year support (ie ending in 2025) but with a bit of hunting I found the latest model for about 10% more and supported until 2029. With the same model numbers across different years you have to check carefully on the Google support website to make sure you're ordering the right one.

For anyone not aware, you can view this info for your enrolled devices in Google Admin. The field/column is Auto-update expiration.
