Isn't the relevant bit,

So hopefully not such a problem. If it's hardware encryption USB a lot of those will reset after 5 incorrect passwords anyway.

Yes but this is the other issue that schools don't ever really think about, how it looks and reputation. If this was a school all anyone will take away is that all their pupil data was saved to a flash drive and lost. Even the fact that the drive was encrypted was left until the end of the article.

I wonder...

 

If this hadn't made such a splash in the press, the thief would have found the stick to be encrypted, and just binned it. Now that it is obviously so valuable, lots of high-level cyber-criminals will be interested in it. Possibly with the money to crack it.
