Which access point type ?

Hi all,

 

 

A small primary school has some internal Ubiquiti Wifi 5 access points already installed.

 

They have purchased a 'Ring doorbell' for their outside school gate which connects over the wifi, but the wifi signal from the gate isn't too great, as naturally the signal range is too far from their internal access points.

 

Just wondered if anyone could recommend an additional access point type for wifi range for the doorbell on outside gate ? Sorry, it's a vague question as you do not know the range.

 

They don't really have any additional network points to connect an additional access point to which is close enough, so our thoughts were possibly an additional Ubiquiti access point that plugs into a normal wall socket which is closer to the gate might be sufficient.

First you want to confirm your existing AP is from the Unifi family from Ubiquiti, if it is, have a look here as you need to setup a Wireless Uplink (Known as a mesh setup as well) so the AP can connect back to the existing one wirelessly. You could even provide a wired output (Bridge mode) from the AP, although keep in mind loss of speed when doing this.

We've been doing a similar thing with some security cameras round our perimeter - we've been using the point to multipoint setup from Ubiquiti, but that's a bit overkill, can you perhaps use 2 of the https://www.4gon.co.uk/ubiquiti-nanostation-loco-m2-mimo-pointtopoint-wireless-bridgebase-station-p-4734.html and make a little wireless bridge extension to your gate?

It's a tick box option in the setup, you tick the box, make an SSID with a passphrase, put the mac of the opposing end of the bridge in where prompted and that's it, they only connect to one another wirelessly. They probably do come with documentation to do it, but I didn't need to read it!
