Security Update - KB5014697 Breaks Wi-Fi Hotspot\Internet

Hi all,

 

Thought i'd share this as it caused me a headache this morning..

 

The Windows 11 update KB5014697, released June 14th 2022 disables the internet when the hotspot is turned on. This is affecting Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7.

At the time of writing there is no fix or workaround that i have found. Microsofts workaround is to not use the feature

It says update for windows security platform KB5007651 (version 1.0.2109.27002)

 

we pressed to retry the updates a few times but it just kept showing that message

No worries There should be a number under that - I can see it in the screenshot but I can't make out the last numbers - Install Error 0x8007xxxx. This is the one I want if it's still showing up, should give a bit more insight to what the issue actually is

I usually delete all of the software distribution folder.

My thnking is there's something in there that Windows uses to keep track of whats installed, attepted and what not.

 

 

net stop wuauserv

net stop bits

rmdir /s /q C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution

net start bits

net start wuauserv

Along with what @DaveTheTech said to try, you can try running these commands on the command prompt:

sfc /scannow

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

 

Might be a silly question, but have you tried running the Windows Update Troubleshooter?

Thank you so much for the tips and advice, we checked the laptop last night and the failed update has disappeared. All other updates have done their thing and successfully downloaded without any issues….odd as to why that’s happened though ? System glitch on Microsoft’s side ??

Hi, Do you need to remove the old update before applying the new one? I can't seem to get my hotspot working again.

I haven't needed to in the past. You should just be able to pick it up when checking for updates in the settings. Its listed under optional updates.

 

Check the update history to see if the update has installed. If it has, try uninstalling and reinstalling the update.

How I do check if install or not. Also how uninstall an update?

To check for an update go to: settings>windows update>update history. Updates are then listed by type, i.e. quality updates, driver updates etc.

The KB5014668 update will be listed under quality updates.

You can then uninstall updates from this window, futher down is 'related settings' and under that is 'Uninstall updates'. Search for KB5014668 under 'Microsoft windows', right click it > uninstall.

 

Ensure you restart after uninstalling, and then restart again after you reinstall.
