Can’t use google DNS

My physical host boots up before the VM’s. One of those VM’s has dhcp and dns so I setup a static IP on the host and set google as dns.

The problem is it says it can’t reach the dns server!

 

Could my isp be blocking using 8.8.8.8 as dns?

Surely I should be able to use any dns?

 

Anyone have any ideas?

Yes, your ISP is probably blocking it as students could probably be using it to avoid filters.

Can you ping it?

 

Try an nslookup against 8.8.8.8?

Static IP on the host, set DNS as your actual DNS servers. Set Hyper-V to auto start your DNS server after 2 minutes... profit?

 

Edit: Our hosts use our local DNS severs (which are VMs) and never had issue when powering them on.

Can't think why your host would need DNS for the 5 minute period while your VMs start... so I'd either set it to your AD DNS as @DalekSec suggested, or your ISP's DNS servers (some ISPs may block DNS to anything except their resolvers to try to prevent hijacked DNS client settings, although would have expected things like quad9, google to be allowed through)

Thanks all. In the end what you say makes sense. Have just added our DNS instead and waiting a few minutes is fine.
