Hi all,

Our Zone Director 1200 fell over on Saturday afternoon and I managed to get it back up and running that evening however it fell over again at midnight last night, I've come in for 6:30 to sort it but this time its not coming back up.

Does anyone by any chance have a Zone Director I could purchase(with ~35 licences assigned ideally)? prepared to drive to collect

It would normally boot up and beep but at the moment its just coming up with 2 solid green lights and the lan is on solid also

Currently downloading the virtual smartzone image in the hopes I can get that up and running easily on a trial but not holdng my breath

Kind regards

Hi James - what APs are you running on the network? Two solid green lights I think mean a memory failure which would mean the device needs to be replaced most likely. If you are the original owner should be able to raise a request on Ruckus but without a valid support contract replacement is around 28 days. If you are in support - you can raise a NBD replacement request. If you need support raising the request - let me know.

If you want to get back up and running today we could help you with changing your deployment to Unleashed - you would need to SSH on to each AP and factory default it, then on its web page upload Unleashed firmware. We can send this over, or you can access it through the Ruckus Support centre. If you let me know AP models we can advise on which Unleashed FW version will work. Would also need to config the new Unleashed network as the ZD config backups isn't portable.

You could then raise the RMA on the ZD1200 and once that has been replaced reverse the process above and upload the standard firmware and upload back-up config file. It's a little hands-on but could get you up and running today.

We can help with the above if you need some guidance.

Edit - The vSZ trial you mention is valid for 60 days but believe it's only for 1 AP.

Thanks Net-Ctrl - We've ended up buying a replacement ZD3000 from ebay for now and are having it couriered across to us, unfortunately we're well out of our Ruckus support. Out of interest how much would Unleashed cost us?

We're using R600 and R610's

edit - thanks for the info on the virtual controller, I thought that was going to be too easy :) would have lasted us till August if it was 90 days and included enough AP licences

You can migrate to Unleashed for free. The only cost is your time to reset the APs and upload the Unleashed firmware. There are support contracts available but not a requirement to make this change.

Sounds like you're all sorted though with the ZD3k.

Fingers crossed! the firmware version is lower than our existing ZD but from what I spotted earlier the AP's will auto downgrade?

out of interest if I were to try upgrading the firmware without support would I run into issues if I already have the firmware files?

I dont think the APs will auto-downgrade as the ZD wont know the FW version they're running if it's higher. You will need to upgrade the ZD to the same FW as the APs first. I'm not 100% on this but think that's correct.

I believe you can upgrade if you have the support files, but I think there might be a certain version where it checks the support status before performing the upgrade.

What FW is it coming to you on, and what FW do you need to upgrade it to? and I will investigate to see if you might run into any problems.

Just to add -if you're the original owner of the ZD1200 you may as well raise an RMA replacement with Ruckus. Even if just to sit as a cold-spare. They will ordinarily go through standard troubleshooting steps to confirm it's dead but then should accept the return/replacement. Only cost in doing that is the shipping.

Ah thank you, would they swap it out with the licences in tact though?

The "new" ZD will be on 9.12.3.0 while the faulty one is likely to have been on 10.4.1.0.214

Thanks for your help with this

Unfortunately the ZD3k wont support version 10.4. The last supported version was 10.2. To get the APs to talk to the ZD you will need to follow the previous SSH route and upload standalone FW to each AP. The ZD will then push out the FW it's running. Your backup file also wont work as it'll be on the wrong FW so you will need to reconfig. Sorry - sure not the new you wanted.

Thanks again :)

I've recieved the ZD and am having to reset each one, when I SSH into them the default login won't work - what would it be if they've connected to a ZD? I'm currently having to manually factory reset them :(

Thanks again for all your help today, I managed to get the ZD upgraded to 10.0 as it refused to upgrade earlier leaving our R610’s unsupported but as soon as 10.0 was on there everything kicked into action and all the R600’s provisioned and connected. I’m sure the R610’s will be sorted once I upgrade further or restart them.

Hi,

First.. sorry to jump onto this old thread!

Currently have the same problem. Ruckus support won't even entertain support without a valid support contract. At the start the ZD kept dropping off. Now when you power on the device you hear a beep. solid status and power light.

ZD1200. I am kinda hoping I can get a support contract and then phone them.

They wouldn't even extend the entitlement by 1 day so I can apply the latest firmware incase that worked. Now it is more worse.

Anything you can do to help?

Kind regards

Hi @5nowman - we can work through the above with you. The options outlined in this thread should still be available for you as well - we can raise an RMA on the failed unit on your behalf with Ruckus. They state up to 28 days for replacement but sometimes the turnaround is a lot faster. In the interim we can look to switch you to Unleashed, a bit of hands on work from you/your team would be needed, so you have some form of Wi-Fi network. Unless co-termed the shortest support contract for lapsed contracts is 1 year so even if we put an application in for an additional discount and that was approved there would still be a cost associated with this dependant on the numbers of APs you have.

If you would like to go through your options in more detail feel free to send me a P with your email, or a suitable time to call to discuss further.
