Upgrading from a B350 to B550 Motherboard. Any Gotcha's?

I'm upgrading my sons PC next week for his birthday pressie as part of a longer term upgrade package as I'll be getting him a Ryzen 5600 (from a 2600) for Xmas, but want to begin with the motherboard to get him on PCIe 4.0.

All I want to know is are there any things I should look out for? All I'm planning to do is delete all of the old drivers, replace the board and reinstall the new drivers.

Is there anything else I could be missing, given the mobo upgrades can go wrong and that I know that some of you have done this, so thought I'd best check first!

Update the BIOS to the latest version before you swap the CPU. Sometimes these boards ship with older versions of the BIOS from before 5XXX series launched and support for these CPUs was added in a later update. Thats caught a few people out I know of where they have had to source an older CPU in order to get the BIOS updated to support the newer CPU they have purchased.

 

Unless it has BIOS flashback support in which case you're golden.

Only issues I've ever had with MOBO upgrades is windows licensing! I think thats been sorted more recently though.

I'll be doing that as soon as I fit it anyway which will cover the 5600, but will do it again when I change the CPU over in case it broke the 5600!
