CCTV analogue encoders

Looking at upgrading an old BNC cable based CCTV system. We have a few locations with different recorders, two with 4 cameras, one with 16 cameras.

 

Is it possible to put a 4/16 channel encoder in those locations (like this one https://us.hikvision.com/en/products/more-products/transmission-and-display-products/encoder-decoder/encoders/turbohd-encoder-1), and then have a central IP based NVR - say 64 channel - where all those analogue cameras are recorded as separate streams?

 

If the proper RS485 controls are connected to the encoder for PTZ is it possible to control the IP cameras' movement through the main 64 channel NVR?

 

Any other insights or ideas?

The first part is possible. If you can find the RTSP URL for a DVR/encoder, then you should be able to plumb it into most other NVRs if they accept an RTSP feed. for Hikvision, its listed here:

You can test the URLs with VLC and if your current DVRs work, then you can use them as encoders.

 

We do this with Milestone XProtect, but they have changed/enforced their licencing with this, and will charge per camera rather than per NVR/DVR.

We've done similar.

 

We had a mixture of HikVision and Bosch, which we found to be a bit 'clunky'.

 

So we utilised our two Synology RackStations (RS3614RPxs) that were being used to hold backups and put them into a cluster. Each have their Surveillance Station module enabled.

 

We then used some Axis Encoders which turned all our cameras into IP cameras.

 

This gave us the time to add more IP CCTV while slowly swapping out the old BNC cameras to newer IP ones.
