[2012 R2] Some users experiencing data loss on home folders after Feb 2022 updates

Ever since the February 2022 Windows Updates, a small number of users with home folders located on one of our Windows Server 2012 R2 file servers intermittently experience data loss. When it happens, the folder structure remains, as do any hidden files, but the files themselves go missing. Similar to what's described here https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2148567-something-deleted-all-files-but-not-folders except it's users' individual home folders (which are Windows shares in their own right).

 

They're all laptop users, and it's been suggested that it may be happening when they return to site after a period of working at home.

 

We tried opening a support ticket with Microsoft, but Microsoft support seems to be as much in the dark as we are.

 

Has anyone heard of this kind of thing happening before, or might be able to suggest a cause we haven't considered?

Do you use Office 365? Someone on here mentioned they were having an issue with a certain 365 release doing similar when setting a custom recovery location as it was wiping the whole location

 

If you do use 365 let me know and will try to find a link to that thread to see if it’s the same setting you have

I was quite excited when I saw this one as I thought it might be it but sadly most of the affected users don't yet have Office 365 desktop apps on their laptops, they are still on Office 2016.
