itgeek Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 Hi, I want to re-direct downloads for the students but I am unsure what option to choose as I don't want it in the user profile. Any help/advise. Thanks
Boredguy Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 You have a couple of choices. In the Folder Direction section of the Group Policy you users get applied, you can direct the Downloads folder to a specific folder, be it in their network drive or another location of your choice. You can also set the download folder in the Chrome and Edge GPO by setting the "Set Download Directory" value. As we use OneDrive for our users, we setup an Environmental Variable called %OneDriveSync% which points to the Download folder in their local "OneDrive - X School" folder and have both folder redirection and Edge/Chrome polices set to point to it 1
psydii Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 (edited) We used group policy folder redirection to a send it to a folder in their home directory. It was by far the largest folder for each user. Despite having enough space (40Tb) I was never happy with this. Now we are using OneDrive, a redirected download folder to ODfB (or any cloud folder) is an *incredibly bad idea* so we let them go to their local user profile, and have it purged when the profile ages out. We encourage the idea that downloads is ephemeral. Edited February 7, 2022 by psydii 1
Ditto Posted March 11, 2022 Posted March 11, 2022 I have posted on a similar topic recently, slightly different to your situation, but thought I'd reference the link (perhaps mods want to merge?) I thought I'd mention my use of browser download settings to achieve my goal. Whether that's of interest might depend on when/where you are downloading from.
kevin_lane Posted March 11, 2022 Posted March 11, 2022 Nope I’ve told our users that if they want to save it then you save it in your home drive otherwise it gets deleted and that goes for logging in and off same for excluding documents , pictures , downloads , videos , music - ms teams app data , zoom from the roaming profiles
