Applying for jobs on the same grade - Starting wage?

Recommended Posts

Ive been looking at a number fo jobs recently where the grade advertised is the same grade as im currently on, where i`m currently at the top of that grade.

How does it work with regards to your starting wage if I was successful when applying for these posts?

Would they start me on the same wage as I`m on now? (top of grade) or would I have to take a pay cut and start at the bottom of the grade?

I Once applied for a job on the same grade and negotiated they match my salary which they did.

It's entirely up to the employer - but if you are applying within the same organisation (LA/Trust) I think they would be obliged to offer the same.

It's entirely up to the employer .

I think that's the main part to take away - is that (apart from a few regulated sectors) it is, by in large, up to the Employer where in a grade they start you.

I started a new job in November, on a higher grade, but was able to start on half way up it due to experience in my previous role and being able to justify why I deserved more money.

Best thing to do is ask. If they say no would you really want to have to go all 'legal' on them even if it was a requirement for them to do it?

Something along the lines of:

"I'm looking for offers in excess of £X and benefits Y to consider moving from my current position".

Some schools will attempt to low-ball you, but you probably don't want to work for them if that's the case.

And the "oh, we have to pay Z grade for that position" isn't true. There's room for negotiation / escalation to someone who can say "pay more for a good candidate".

I've often wondered something along the same lines...

I've always presumed that as an I.T technician or Network Manager working for a school under an specific LEA we would all (under the same LEA) be paid the same (or on a scale within a given grade dependant on how long you've been employed/experience).

I'm not certain that in that case a school can suddenly give extra remuneration for a given post (above the pay grade for a given defined position).

As for the OP in that case, if they advertise a job within a certain grade (say Grade X, £20,000 - £25,000), you should be able to negotiate 'depending on experience'.

I believe schools can use R&R (Recruitment and retention) to add upto 12-15% onto a grade. This is usually temporary (1 year) but I've had it a few times in my career.
