Hi there,

For some reason, every since the Printer Nightmare towards the end of last year, this particular server is refusing to install some updates.

You will see from the below, between October 21 and January, no updates were installed.

I have removed the server from the WSUS GPO so it now manually can download updates, it has managed to install a few starting on 10th Jan 2022 and then some more on 12th but continues not to be able to install:

KB5006714

KB5008263

KB5009624

Does anyone know why this would be?

Here are some further details and error code:

Have tried rebooting server several times and it has made zero difference.

My Windows Update is being a bit strange as well as I can see KB5006714 in the installed updates history, but it isn't available in 'Installed Updates'...

KB5006714.jpg

KB5008263 is in both...

KB5008263.jpg

Are you able to download them from the Microsoft Catalog...

Have you researched each update to see if there is a prerequisite?

Might not be a Hyper-V or domain controller?

Yeah, true.... but just in case the OP wasn't aware - as it has been pulled, is there some way MS stops it installing (probably not, just guessing)?

Thanks guys, no was not aware, I did happen to see a few articles online between seeing these replies so I 'removed' the update.

But still getting issues...

Has anyone else had issues with these specific updates?

If you removed it, have you tried getting the January update - KB5009624 back (download from the Microsoft Update Catalog), as I think(?) you would need that before trying to install KB5010794 (as it was a patch for the January update - so I did them together once the patch came out).

If these are cumulative updates is it even worth bothering with Nov 2021 - KB5007247...?

Hi there,

Thanks for your post and sorry for the long delay. I tried what you suggested several times and this was the result when installing the KB5009624 MSU:

MSUInstall.jpg

And here is a view from Event Log:

EvtLog.jpg

I decided to extract the CAB from the MSU.

I ran it using DISM in elevated CMD.

As usual, error yet again:

CMDErrorDISM.jpg

DISM log attached to this post. dism.txt

I have an extremely long list of failed updates in Windows Update History now which is very worrying. Can anyone advise? Win Server 2012 R2 Version 6.3 Build 9600.

I think its got to the point where it will be faster/easier to rebuild the server with a newer OS

The thought had crossed my mind several times, but unfortunately, the school in question does not have the funds to do so and had really been hoping we could do an inplace upgrade to 2016 as this is the max the server could support, however, it would be futile to implace upgrade when it is refusing to take any updates.

Are there any other options available? :(

Not necessarily... Even if it is a in-place 2012R2 reinstall(?) it must just be what it needs to shake things loose, fix corruption etc.

Anyway, as this started with the Print Nightmare update, could it be that it was messed around with a little as we were all trying to stop it/uninstall it/reinstall it/patch it...?

Could be that it is borked and stopping/holding everything else up, maybe it actually needs removing - this from a Google on the error number '2148468785'?

Did you try the advise of the Windows Update Troubleshooter, or did you try anything basic (not that I want to sound like a copy/paste MS help and support forum) like sfc, dism, scandisk...? Probably won't help, but won't hurt...

Have you tried installing the latest SSU manually?

I can't see it installed on my 2012R2... but I have got:

Thanks for your reply. I have not been through everything you list. But did just run a sfc /scannow and got the following result.

scf scannow Friday Afternoon.jpg

I have had a look through the log, not spotted anything yet but it is quite large.

I have also tried to troubleshoot several times, but there is no facility to troubleshoot the Windows Updates.

Just tried again to make sure I didn't miss anything and there is literally no way of troubleshooting...

From Upate History, if I click on Troubleshoot problems with installing updates, I get this which is useless:

WinUpdateTroubleshoot.jpg

If I go via Control Panel>Action Center>Troubleshoot Computer Problems>System and Security, once more, I get this utter nonsense:

TroubleshootProblems.jpg

Everything I try, is a dead end.

Will try and work through some of the other things you mentioned on Monday.

There are some more serious solutions, but I figure you might be close to needing them...

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/deployment/fix-windows-update-errors

and stuff you might have already researched:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/update/windows-update-troubleshooting

There are also some more nuclear options...

https://serverfault.com/questions/625332/windows-update-not-working-on-windows-2012-r2-standard

I did notice in your manual update failing in the DISM log:

2022-07-15 13:30:55, Error DISM DISM.EXE: Failed validating command line: dism /Online /Add-Package/PackagePath:"C:\Temp\KB5009624\Windows8.1-KB5009624-x64.cab"

I would just use 'find' to look for 'error' if the new log is very detailed.

Also, just noticing KB5005613 was installed twice, was it uninstalled in-between (this was one of the 'Print Nightmare' updates)?

KB5005613.jpg

It may be a little drastic and I'm not sure what will happen (can it get any worse though?), but this is where it all seemed to start going wrong as no more CUs install after that.... maybe uninstall it if you can?

Thank you for your post.

You are quite right about the issues starting with that particular update. To be honest, the school and me for that matter, are sick and tired of the constant issues with Microsoft.

We also have Office 365 licences and constantly have issues with the licences dropping off of the admin account. They are purchased via Trust Marque. Everything to do with Microsoft seems to be problems.

The school have made it quite clear, they are not paying for anything related to Microsoft and I don't blame them, particularly now as you are very right, the problems began with the printer nightmare which took us months to get resolved.

All of your suggestions were very helpful, but again, I am unable to proceed.

If I run a DISM Cleanup Image, it reports an issue and says it was cleaned, however, after a reboot, same issue again.

I have cleared the Windows Update file store, but within a few hours, it is back to the usual tricks. Even the following:

DISM.EXE /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:F:\Sources\install.wim /Limit Access

Which points to a Server 2012 R2 install ISO has not helped.

Your suggestion of removing the KB5009624 was a very good last resort, however, as usual with Microsoft products, yet again, I am unable to proceed as apparently, it is not installed when I go to installed upates. This was showing as uninstalled before I cleared the update store and rebooted.

If I download this specific update from the Update site online and try and install, it will not install and throws an error so yet again I am stuck.

If you have any other suggestions, they would be greatfully recieved, but sadly, if we cannot overcome this, the head wants to move to Google Workspace for Education which is a terrible shame when the school has high performance, TMP chip enabled, i5-i7 systems from good vendors. But I just can't blame her as it it really has been problem after problem, several complaints to Microsoft and all have been ignored. It really is a shame that Microsoft doesn't have a better Education sector with people on hand to speak to schools experiencing issues. The printer nightmare situation was dire for so many schools and the support Microsoft provided was pathetic in my opinion. Over half of the schools I work with are looking to make the switch to Google and almost all have cited the printer nightmare or licencing problems as their deciding factor. :(

Easiest fix is an in place upgrade which will fix the corruption as someone mentioned above.

Other than that you need to check the cbs.log.

Thanks for your post. I am really tempted, but with so many erroneous responses on this server so far, I am just really worried I might do an in place upgrade and it will totally fall over. Are the chances of that high? Never had to do one before.

I did an IPU on a server 2019 box that wasn't installing updates from the WSUS role it was hosting and it fixed the issues with it installing updates. I did lose the WSUS DB but was easier to reconfigure that than fight a 30GB+ SUSDB back into shape. This was just putting 2019 back on over the top of the broken install and it's been fine for the last year or so now

Have you seen this? https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/37901.windows-server-2012-r2-troubleshooting-windows-updates-failed-to-install-with-error-code-800f0831-in.aspx

Look at CBS.log as this should give you the KB id of the update that's causing issues (possibly a missing prerequisite?)

Thanks for your post.

I did have a good look through the CBS log and I kept seeing the following:

CBSLog.png

So I downloaded the KB5015874 update but againwhen I manually installed, I get the following:

FailedUpdate.png

It doesn't seem to matter which update I try and manually install, they all fail.

Hello, thanks for the post, sorry I forgot to say, yes - it keeps telling me it already has it installed.

I've just re-read all posts and spotted the bit about the dism cleanup not cleaning up. This was one of the issues that my 2019 box had and only the in-place upgrade sorted it (this was an 'upgrade' from 2019 to 2019). I wanted to do a fresh install but was overruled...

In some cases, just pointing it at the public windows update servers and letting it scan/install has worked in the past, however, it sounds like your install is way past that stage.

At this point, take a backup first and do an IPU to server 2012 R2 (using the latest media on the volume licensing portal) as you will probably spend lots of time going nowhere fast trying to troubleshoot, then get that patched and upgrade to 2016 if you have the licences. Just be aware that 2016 has it's own set of issues with windows update and the 'fix' is to upgrade to server 2019, but by the sounds of it that's not an option with hardware support.

Thank you for your post, that is very interesting. I didn't realise you could do an IPU from 2019 to 2019 or 2012 R2 to 2012 R2, I assumed it would be 2012R2 to 2016 or 2012R2 to 2019 etc, etc.

I am going to try and arrange a meeting with the head to discuss this and see if she his happy for me to proceed. She has become, over the years, very anti-Microsoft.

I have full backups, so very tempted to just do a 2012 R2 to 2012R2 as you suggest, but I suppose I had best run it past her first.

Hello all,

I just wanted to provide an update.

Unfortunately, the school as not prepared to spend any further money on this issue - and I can't say I blame them.

I think I mentioned earlier on in this thread, this was not the school's first rodeo with Microsoft related issues, having had various issues with licencing whereby they had to wait months to be able to use their 365 licences, licences which had been paid for and were not able to be used with no offer of credit.

Sadly for this school, their Microsoft journey has come to an end and they will be moving fully cloud to Google.

The plan moving forward is to run the server into the ground whilst using hybrid Google and once the server is toast, fully cloud.

Thanks for nothing Microsoft but thank YOU to everyone who offered ideas, experience and tips on this matter
