MatthewL Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 We have massive issues with Outlook ost's filling up disk space when someone just nips on to check email it could pull down 5GB on shared machines it soon fills up the space as we currently are. I spoke to a friend who told me then have ditched Outlook and all now using webmail, which for majority of users is all they need and its quicker. How do you do it? Do you use just Outlook on PC's, allow either or OWA only? Staff do have it on phones but that's not an issue it's more around desktop side.
mthomas08 Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 We use both. Our current server is a little bit old and the OWA is outdated and terrible compared to outlook.
psydii Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 Kids were taught to use OWA. Staff were taught to not used student PCs. Used a loopback group policy on the shared computers ou to force online mode for outlook users logging on to those machines. - However outlook/exchange has been engineered to expect cached mode, this setup if used widely will lead to performance issues, hence the above. Teacher desktops generally had far fewer users so were not considered 'shared'.
Koldov Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 (edited) All our staff use OWA (as they only have one email account), so I purposefully exclude it and don't install Outlook when installing Office on their machines apart from my own and one or two others in SLT who have to deal with multiple email accounts. So my vote is OWA and Outlook (not really) available (only at my discretion and to a select few)... Edited January 10, 2022 by Koldov
MatthewL Posted January 10, 2022 Author Posted January 10, 2022 There was issues regarding our tenant in O365 which stopped online mode been used but that appears to have been changed. What policy are you setting as we are looking to do this on a batch of machines where we have the biggest issue.
Planehazza Posted January 18, 2022 Posted January 18, 2022 (edited) Teachers are moving around different rooms a lot here. Outlook desktop is too slow and runs the risk of clogging local disks. We have an unwritten policy, more advice really, to use OWA in the classroom/work rooms, and Outlook when at 'your PC' in the office. We use Office 365 BTW, as we use Teams and SharePoint for resource storage. 365 is much better than 2019 for cloud integration. Downside is the necessity for shared device licensing (or perhaps I've used the ODT wrong) meaning that every user has to have Microsoft Apps for Faculty/Students assigned otherwise Office desktop apps won't be licensed...
