Reminder: Google Meet Recording Freebie - Ending Jan 10 2022

Reminder from Google regarding the end of the Meet recording freebie. The freebie ends on 10th January. Worth bearing in mind given the current prospects for COVID impacting in the new year (again).

Starting January 10, 2022, recording Google Meet sessions will return to being a premium Google Workspace for Education feature.

Effective January 10, 2022, recording Google Meet sessions will return to being a premium Google Workspace for Education feature. As such, this feature will be available only to organizations using the Google Workspace for Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning Upgrade editions.

What does this mean for my organization?

Recording a video meeting has always been a premium feature in Google Meet. In the spring of 2020, we announced that we would offer this feature for free to help our Education customers transition to remote learning. The free premium recording promotional period will end on January 10, 2022.

Starting on January 10, 2022, all customers using Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals (free edition) or Google Workspace for Education Standard will lose access to the recording feature in Google Meet. This rollout will take several weeks to complete, so some organizations may still be able to record meetings during the month of January and early February 2022. Any previously recorded meetings will remain in Google Drive for their user or group, unless they’re deleted by the file owner.

This is a little worrying. I think there is a reasonable chance we'll need to do some remote learning next term and we've seen recording these as a vital safeguarding tool. Does anyone have a feel for pricing on the "Teaching and Learning Plus" edition? Or is there anyone here from Google who can comment on whether the free access would be continued in the event of further lockdowns?

Alternatively, has anyone got a workaround - maybe a screen recorder I suppose?

Screen recorder is the obvious solution. Did this long before it was ever an embedded feature.

We have Plus licencing - so it does not impact us and I'd recommend it.

Meet recoding is only one of many things you get. The super powers you get in the admin console alone make it worth for us. I'd not cope without the investigation tool now. You also get Enhanced Desktop Security - so can manage Windows devices directly in the admin console.

We buy our licences from C-Learning, but any Google partner can give you a quote.

Never heard of it. Tell me more...

They originally announced that when premium recordings was returned back to a paid feature, schools would be left with temporary recordings, a version that:

  • Recordings couldn't be downloaded
  • Recordings could only be shared in your own Google for Education domain
  • Automatically deleted 30 days after the recording

Google may well push this date out again as it does look like there will be more home learning on the way ;-( Does anyone know if you can record for free in Teams?

When did they announce they were pulling it in January 2022?

I think it was more a case of they announced that they would be extending it until January 2022. Can't recall when that was, but earlier this year, at least.

Hi do you know where this is listed? I can't find anywhere on Google that says this, all it says is "Compare your editions" with a Tick under "Record" but with ** that say "until Jan 9th", but it doesn't say anything about what will happen after then. We are on just the Education Fundamentals package. We do get recording now with Hwb via a deal with the Welsh Government, they have extended it until July 31st for all Hwb users - but we use our own domain and getting everyone to use Hwb will be a nightmare. If it reverts to keeping a 30 day recording under the users own Drive, that is fine for us as we only want recording to deal with any allegations about bad behavior during the online lesson.

It was announced here.

They're not going to be offering temporary recordings in the future, they changed their minds on that - so if you need it - you'll need to get a paid license.

OK I can see where they announced what they call "temporary recordings" which are the 30 day recordings- to ALL education customers, even us on the cheapest "fundamentals" license. Have Google released a statement saying that this will be going away this week too as I am unable to find one? For things that are so important I hate how this corporate language is so damned vague

They emailed the contact in your Admin Console to say it wouldn't be a feature that was being released going forward, apparently.

I'm not the Admin Console contact, so didn't receive it.

What are people using as an alternative?

We've purchased teaching and learning upgrade licences for teaching staff, SLT and the IT team (£27/user/year).

We're trying the screen capture function in PowerPoint at the moment. Works fine in our testing but the videos are quite large and obviously then need to moved to cloud storage to replicate the google meet functionality.
