Corsair AIO Cooler finally died after 15 years use!

Well I've had this cooler now for 15 years, it's Corsair branded and for it's £60 price I think I got my money's worth.

 

Moved into my new place and powered on my rig, the pump was making a sloshy noise and my PC was running incredibly slowly. Me being an idiot thought it'd just calm down, went to chill on GTA5 for a few hours which got stuck on the loading screen and wouldn't load the game.

 

After recognising even clicking the start button wasn't responding I checked HWMonitor. It said my CPU temp was at 154 Celsius and as soon as i saw that number my computer powered off itself.

 

Hoping there's no damage it's a Ryzen 2700x? But concerned because according to HW it got bloody hot before it shut down itself! I turned it back on after a while and it loaded but I immediately turned it back off again. Ordered some cheapo fan cooler off Amazon for now as I literally have no money after buying my house but it'll do the trick.

If that 154 degrees is accurate, there will have been some significant shortening of component lifespan going on. That’s enough to make the socket go soft - I would pull the CPU from the board to check it all.

 

With a new cooler, check that the CPU and boards temperature protection is active. They are supposed to throttle right down to nothing.

Seems like your CPU has gone nuclear! I'm surprised it even got to 154c to be honest! I think most BIOS / UEFI have a temp limit that can be set. Edited October 28, 2021 by Protec

I'm hoping it was just a false reading but was obviously high as it powered off. I'll have to see how it performs when the new cooler is on. I'll check the BIOS for temp limits, I've always just assumed these where a default setting?

 

I suppose that's the advantage to a standard air cooler, it's just a fan and a heats sink and won't really malfunction in the same way.

 

I let it cool down and removed the CPU, all pins look okay and I checked the back of the socket which again looks okay. I guess time will tell. Otherwise I'm saving up for the a new CPU and/or motherboard I guess.

It seems far too high to be accurate, but yes the board protection is normally on by default. Worth a check though!

 

Remember the videos of K7 Athlons exploding off their boards when the HSF was removed? P4s of the time would just shut themselves down to the point that they'd lock up or be within thermal limits using the integrated heat spreader.

 

Nothing to lose by trying it with the new cooler, and stress testing it.

Yeah my thoughts too, it was rising as well when I started to look at it so I hope to god it didn't get that hot. Yeah I remember those videos, although fun to watch!
