Do you set 'client side printing' or have it rendered on the print server?

I was told a few years back by a Ricoh engineer to have all the printing rendered on the print server, but I just noticed some informatipon on Papercut (which we dont use), that suggests it's best to let the clients do the rendering.

 

So what do you all have, client side or server side renering?

I have 'Render print jobs on client computers' ticked (in the 'Sharing' tab)...

 

I also have 'Print directly to the printer' ticked (in the 'Advanced' tab)...

 

I can't remember the reasons for these settings as really I kind of thought those were at least 2 of the main reasons for having a 'Print Server'!

 

It has been this way for years and the only thing I can think of is (IIRC) that I had some issues with Kyocera printers and 'Job Accounting' and this fixed it at the time.

Just read the following on PaperCut website. Thought it would be of interst....

 

You should know that prior to Windows 8, Client Side Rendering could be enabled by checking the box “Render print jobs on client computers” in on your Windows print queue, but newer Windows laptops and tablets (anything with a battery) will deliberately ignore this setting unless it has been forced via Group Policy or PowerShell.

All of our printers are set to client-side rendering. It's the default, and we've had no reason to change it.

 

If Papercut say use client-side, I'd take their word for it over that of a photocopier engineer, unless said engineer has provided any specifics as to why their devices need to be server-side rendering.
