MS OVS-ES - Adding SQL Server

Hello,

 

I am looking at adding SQL server onto our MS OVS-ES agreement as we need to upgrade SQL on our SIMS server in the near future. I am a bit unsure of how to add this so we are licenced correctly and my reseller isn't sure either! I think I need to add them as Core licences which seems to be the most flexible option and how we've added Windows Server to our agreement in the past.

 

We have 2 VM host servers each 2 physical CPU's and they have 6 cores each. Our SIMS VM currently has 4 vCPU's assigned.

 

Could anyone let me know how they have added SQL with a similar server setup?

According to the MS SQL Server 2019 licence guide

 

To license a VM or container with core licenses, purchase a core license for each virtual core (virtual thread) allocated to the VM or the number of cores configured for access by the container (with a minimum of 4 core licenses per VM or container).

We have always bought "Microsoft SQL Server Standard Server" licenses, and accompanying CALs for the machines that connect.

 

So, we run 3 SQL standard servers - so have 3 licenses, and 180 CALs for devices to connect to them.

Where as we went for the SQLSvrStdCore 2Lic pack (4 of them) as we just have the single SQL server instance for SIMS

Whether you go with Sever/Cal or Core licensing will depend on the number of users accessing the SQL server - there's a break point where Core licensing is cheaper.

I think I will be going for this option too. With buying 4 does that cover you for 8 vCPU's on your SIMs VM?
