Hi,

 

School looking to implement BYOD, just wondering if there are some reading resources on what to do, how to manage devices etc?

 

What is everyone else doing?

I think it depends on the school and what you want students to use their devices for.

 

We're a sixth form and students are free to bring any device they like and connected to our BYOD SSID, they get the usual web filtering and can access selected internal services such as Papercut mobility print and Planet eStream. Otherwise they just have internet access. Use of devices in lessons varies by subject, for example our History department are huge OneNote fans and students use laptops for every lesson.

I want to expand our BYOD but I have real problems with the certificate for HTTPS inspection, I can not find a way to make it easy for the users to install the stumbling blocks are:

 

1 Users if it is even slightly difficult they don't like it

 

2 Distribution of the cert, web is obviously difficult before it is installed, we don't allow BYOD access the the file shares and outlook doesn't like certificate files and throws all sorts of warnings

 

How do you overcome the certificate issue?

In our case thats the trade off that we make and as a result don't do SSL Decryption on our BYOD network. It's bad enough getting Android users to install the CA certificate to connect.

This should be a major consideration as Google and Apple are trying out do each other in the Privacy stakes with no thought to Education. Safeguarding kind of precludes ignoring SSL traffic across the board, but forcing your certificate onto a device that you don't own may cause issues.

 

There are solutions, like Ruckus CloudPath, that will assist users to onboard themselves, minimising tech input and ensuring everything is carried out that you want, but this is then an added cost.

Luckily we will be upgrading the WiFi soon so I will keep this in mind
