Sonic007 Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Hi all, I'd really appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction in making sure I have things setup correctly. The setup: The host machine is a Windows 2016 Server with 2 HyperV virtual servers: 1 Domain Controller and 1 Sims Server. The host machine is currently not on the network. The domain controller and Sims server are on the network and are setup with static IP's. These Virtual servers connect via a virtual switch setup in HyperV. Lets call this VSwitch1 The virtual switch is configured to use the host machines NIC1 and connects fine. I currently have it set with a static IP. (I assume I needed to do that as if it had been DHCP it wouldnt have known where to go since host machine is not on network). Does this all sound ok so far? The next bit I want to make sure is that the host machine can also update itself. Currently it isnt connected to anything and in network connections there is NIC1 (the physical adapter) and the Virtual switch displayed. I need to get the host to get it's windows updates so am I fine to give NIC1 a static IP and that should be OK? Many thanks all.
djm968 Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 (edited) When you say the host is not on the network, do you mean it isn't joined to the domain? The physical host must be connected to the network and have an IP address, otherwise your two virtual machines would not be able to access the network and you would not be able to access them from any other device. If the host has an IP and the default gateway is correctly set, it should be able to access windows update directly. Edited September 2, 2021 by djm968 1
Sonic007 Posted September 2, 2021 Author Posted September 2, 2021 Sorry, Yes I mean not on the domain.
TwistedHelixis Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 (edited) all my hosts (nic1) have static IP's, wouldn't want dhcp for them anyway. EDIT - Unless its the adapter that is actually routing your VM data. open the adapter settings and check to see if ip4 is checked, if not dont change anything Edited September 2, 2021 by TwistedHelixis 1
