mikeprice Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 Hi all I'm confused - again. AT the moment my energy deal is probably the lowest around - it is with EDF, but only because I was taken over by them when Green Energy Network collapsed So that is basically OK at the moment but the deal runs out in October EDF have sent me an email offering to switch me to a different but fixed tariff So - naturally - I have checked on the comparison sites and the best tdeal they can come up with is over £20 per month DEARER than my current deal. However, I would also like a deal that uses green energy, at least mostly - whereas EDF offer a carbon free option but on checking it turns out to be pretty much 100% nuclear. So - my dilemma is whether to switch - at a higher cost per month - now - or wait until the current deal is about to expire and see what is around then Clearly this is all down to the increase in the 'price cap' due to an increase in the wholesale gas price over the last few months So - I was wondering what the collective wisdom on here is thinking???
timbo343 Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 Energy prices have rocketed up in the past year! I've just come out of a tariff with Octopus from Frb 2020 and if i was to stay with them, it would cost me an additional £200 per year compared to what i was on. Octopus seem to now be up there with the big 6. Im looking at moving to Arvo Energy this week - they seem to be the cheapest around at the moment, and cheapest by far. Im only a light user, 1605kWh on Electric and 5741kWh on Gas per year. I'vw seen the wholesale price of Gas and Electric had dropped in the last couple of weeks but energy compabies wont pass on the drop in costs just yet, there could be a couple of month catch up before we see prices fall again. 1

That is useful info - thanks! On that basis I could wait and the prices will have started to fall a bit - maybe Unless the companies see an opportunity to 'enhance' profits for a while due to the fuss over the price cap

Just like petrol... quick to increase prices but slow to drop them. Council tax UP £20 a month from two years ago Energy bills UP roughly £25 a month from two years ago Petrol UP £30 a month from one year ago I'm estimating our water/waste bill will be up about £40 compared to what it was 2 years ago. Something is very wrong with this country among many other things... This doesn't even include our food costs going up and we still do our best to buy everything from Aldi/Lidl. I even have an ECO car with £20 tax a year, we went down the route of buying more eco friendly appliances and bulbs... and still look at us. We've cut down takeaways and rarely have weekend breaks and holidays anymore.....
