Backup Software - Acronis etc

Hello All

 

Quick question - I have a licence for Acronis which has worked well over the years - But I have found today when I take a backup, and then try and open this backup on my machine it opens the backup in Read-Only mode.

 

This is causing me issues as I need to change some permissions on a folder which as it's in read-only mode it won't let me.

 

Due to this does anyone know of any other software that will allow me to take a backup of a systems drive and then browse this on my PC and make changes to the volume.

Why do you need to change permissions in a backup?

 

You should want immutable backups so they can't be maliciously modified in storage, I'd be concerned about moving to an alternative that allows that.

While I think you for the reply, it doesn't matter why I need to change them - I simply do. So unless you are aware of a program that allows this then have a good day.

I don't think any backup software can provide that, it kind of defeats the purpose of a backup.

If you could change it, it wouldn't be a backup.

 

If you want to change something, you'll need to restore it - it will then be a live version and you can do what you want with it.

 

If you want to have both versions, I'd suggest either:

1) Restore to different hardware

2) Restore to a VM using Hyper-V running on your current hardware

3) Take a second backup (or copy the existing complete backup) and restore to your current hardware to give you a reversion path if something goes wrong

Acronis use to support this ability - but they removed it a few versions ago. From what I can see on the Acronis forms this has caused some issues with customers and they are looking to add it back in again. Fingers crossed.
