Can I uninstall old versions of SQL?

Morning,

 

When you install a new version of SQL do you fully uninstall the old version after migrating any databases or only uninstall parts of the old version? There are lots of SQL bits listed in add remove programs and I'm not 100% sure if anything needs to be left or is shared with the newer version under the hood.

 

FYI I went from SQL 2012 to SQL 2016, migrated the SIMS, FMS and solus databases OK and now have lots of SQL 2012 bits listed in add remove programs.
