Windows Server Backup

Hello all

 

So I have an old 2008 server that has now given up and decided it will no longer power on.

 

So new server on order, but in the meantime I have pulled the USB HDD from the server that was configured to use Windows Server Backup, and thought I would connect this up to a PC and explore the VHD file and get some user data out ASAP for the users.

 

But - No - Nothing is ever that simple. Looks like WSB has formatted the drive (given its label) and my PC knows it has a volume on it - but I cant access it - Short of finding another server etc does a program exist where I can run it on my laptop that will know what to do with the drive and allow me to pull data from it?

Is it possible to mount the VHD as a drive in Disk Management to see if that gets you anywhere?

 

I ditched Windows Server Backup a while ago mainly as it was so slow to restore and then it would cause plenty of errors.

 

Instead, I now do Exports from HYperV and then just Import them back in if needed.
