Announcing the first Insider Preview for Windows 11

 

Hello Windows Insiders, we are excited to release the first Windows 11 Insider Preview build to the Dev Channel, Build 22000.51! As we finalize the product over the coming months, we will work with you to validate the experience. You will get to try many, but not all, of the new features we showed last week in this early preview. We will bring more features such as Chat with Microsoft Teams and Android apps in the Microsoft Store over the coming months as they are ready for you – we are just getting started on this journey together!

Apart from the confusing messaging on TPM requirements and the fairly ridiculous requirements to even run Windows 11...

 

We've all now got until October 14th 2025 to ensure all our PCs are 8th gen CPU or higher, they may or may not need a TPM etc etc.

 

These requirements will obviously change as enterprise customers react and complain but once again MS have put themselves in the ridiculous position of having to change announced requirements instead of getting them right in the first place.

I cannot see us changing 400 computers by the end of 2025 when its just taken 6 years to change 300

Started playing around with the insider preview on a test PC. Still feels very windows 10 once you drill down past the new UI. Admin tools such as disk management and group policy editor look exactly the same but with rounded edges. The start menu looks to be handled differently from how I remember configuring windows 10.

Overall once you get past the UI changes it's not much different. Few extra things to lock down perhaps for some but nothing too worrying other than the TPM requirements. Can't comment on apps installed by default as it was in place upgrade of 21h1 so a few apps may have carried over.

The overall interface hasn’t changed that much since Vista, broadly speaking things are in the same place they’ve ever been. Yes, they’ve messed about with the start menu and the occasional setting has moved about by one you get past that, it’s still Windows.

 

Frankly, you could drop an XP user from 2001 in front of a Windows 10/11 computer and they’d still be able to use it to a basic extent, things haven’t changed that much.

 

I put it in a VM yesterday, it was nice to see that transitions on windows are back! The drop shadows, rounded corners and centralised taskbar make it look very Mac-like on first glance

Not sure if there is an ISO available yet. I upgraded a standalone PC using the insider dev channel.
