[ms office - 2019] Office 2019 Updates Location

Hi.

 

I'm currently doing our Office 2019 Update for this summer from Office 2016.

We are mainly Windows 10 LTSC 2019, and Server 2019 for RDS/RAS

 

How do you deal with updates? I have currently set my install config.xml file to get the updates from a network share. How do you populate this UNC path location with updates?

It seems you still need a device which has access to the CDN, which is fine, but where are the updates located? How do I populate the updates UNC path. All very unclear!

I would ideally like to just use the CDN, but this seems unlikely at present, as we are using Smoothwall with proxy for users, on Windows 10.

 

Some pointers would be appreciated!

If it helps, we use the CDN through a Smoothwall and that’s the proxy. Never bothered with the local update location - seemed a faff and didn’t follow MS’ advice. Takes some looking after.

Hmm I'll keep going then trying to get this to work.

Would rather use the CDN as you say. How do you identify out of date machines, or troubleshoot them, since you can no longer deploy Office updates via WSUS?

I can probably run a scan on the office version using PDQ Inventory at a guess?

I don’t monitor the version o Office 2019. I know that if I go to a machine and manually check it, it’ll either be ip to date or will then update - lots of testing got me there. I had to change some GP settings that I’d locked down in older versions - like ones which restrict Office connecting to online servers.

I'm in the middle of upgrading from Office 2016 to 2019 and originally set the config file to update from a local UNC path, but now after reading it's easier to update from CDN I added a GP policy to set the update path to blank in 'Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Microsoft Office 2016 (Machine)\ Updates' which as I understand force updates from CDN but no updates are coming through and clicking update now in Word gives the 'Something went wrong' error.

 

Where have I gone wrong?

I think you have to re-push the config out - at least officially. I have a feeling that there's something buried, either in the registry or the installer. Try searching for your update location in the registry.

Yes you are correct, there are still references to the old UNC path in the registry. Shame, I thought it was too easy.
