Storage Spaces Direct Question.....

Quick question for those running Storage Spaces Direct

 

Looking at a 3 node cluster running Storage Spaces Direct.

 

Each Node will 4 x 4TB drives for storage

 

But not sure if I should go with 2 x 2TB SSD drives or 2 x 960GB SSD Drives for the caching layer.

 

What SSD sizes are other people using.

Is there a significant difference in price, and/or any difference in performance between the two types of SSD drive? My guess is that the 960GB SSDs should be fine - I'd be surprised if the average school had 960GB of files in active use on a daily basis, which is what you want your fast-as-possible cache layer to be holding.

In our 3 node cluster each server has 2 x 480GB SSDs with 6 1.8TB HDDs, all seems to work rather well with no performance issues. Ideally would have liked all SSD but over budget at the time

2 x 1TB SSD and 6 x 2TB SAS on each of our 3 nodes.

 

Currently everything fits into the cache layer, so it's pretty speedy, although reads are also cached in a hybrid set up

Don't have experience with S2D yet myself, but when I was researching recently, MS Docs suggested the cache could be as little as 5% of the storage capacity for all SSD solutions and 10% for HDD solutions:
