[sims] What happens if I admit students early?

So, we've got an automated routine that creates users from admission numbers. Obviously, in order to do this, we need admission numbers.

 

Students don't have admission numbers until their status is changed to "admitted", and this doesn't normally happen until the INSET day. All the documentation says not to admit until *after* the year starts.

 

Except we're offering summer school, we'd like to get accounts set up for that.

 

Is there any harm going through the "Admit Applications" routine before the start of the year, given that the Admission Date is set within the Admission Group?

 

I'm not sure what happens during the "Admit Applications " process.

Students will be put into there intake groups for the next academic year and then you can start reporting on them. We usually start the process of Admitting student in July (once term is over) then we have 6-8 weeks to get them ready on all the system. Whatever your automated routine is might still need to be told the current status and intake year of your new student mind as they won't be current students.

Provided your start dates are correct (in the next academic year), there shouldn't be any problems.

 

We've admitted early for years due to certain things needing to sync and be ready before the first day of term.

no problem admitting students early....you can always delete them if they don't turn up via Routines > Student > Delete Student

It's often necessary or convenient to trick SIMS by pre-admitting students and staff, especially so they sync to integrated systems as current students/staff before joining. Just be sure to update admission/start date/DOA once joined or archive/delete if they never turn up.

 

It would be great if third party developers support busy school staff by providing the 'include admissions' or 'effective date' filter available within SIMS to avoid this trick.
