[sims] Sims server migration

Planning to do a sims server migration this summer from server 2012 to server 2019

Along with updated sql version.

 

Could I get away with simply installing a fresh copy of sims on a new server and then copy over and attach the database and then copy over odd folders like T4 and exams?

 

Or is there more to it?

I haven't done a SIMS migration in donkeys years, but, what I always used to do was detach the database(s), copy your SIMS, Docstorage and any other folders over, then run a fresh install of SIMS and re-attach the databases.

 

Never underestimate how much random stuff in the SIMS root folder that may still be in use....

Then there's just all the extra addons like xporter/SSM etc to consider depending on what you use

Back in the days we had Sims, we just paid Capita the £700 to migrate it for us.

If you are upgrading SQL there will be a migration tool you should use. it can also be used to move SIMS from one server to another.

 

Sorry I dont have the tool but I would ask your support for it first.

Capita have sent me the Summer 2020 migration tools, so will be having a look at that and running a test run on in a test lab away from the network.
