Edge Chromium Read Aloud

Folks..

 

I have a slightly "niche" problem

 

In exactly the same way as I did with Chrome, I've applied pupil GPOs for Edge Chromium so that "edge://*" is in the "blocked URL" list, and a couple of the bits of Chrome that we do want folk to access (chrome://print, for example) are in the "allowed URL" list.

 

And that all works fine.

 

Except... When pupils use "Read Aloud", it runs - but the toolbar doesn't appear. Meaning pupils can't configure or STOP it from reading everything out loud.

 

If I remove chrome://* from the block list, then the toolbar appears fine.

 

I've done some testing, and scraped together a script to read in all of the chrome URLs from chrome://about and add that to the "allowed URL" in blocks of 5. Still no joy.

So I'm assuming that the toolbar for Read Aloud is a mystery URL which isn't listed anywhere.

 

Any chance anyone knows what this mystery URL is?

 

I'd posted this on 2 of their support forums. Home user closed the call, saying I'd need to use their (paid) support. Insider community haven't replied.

 

Any chance any of you clever bods know the answer?

Does Developer Tools show anything? I'm not hopeful as it is an internal address but the console may show something?

Sorry - I forgot to say that I'd tried that. Negative, it doesn't appear to show anything internal... Unless I'm being a gibbon, and missing something.

I'd love if someone comes back and says "Umm - yes it does, you gibbon.. The URL is...."

Give Wireshark or some of the sysinternals tools a try, you should be able to identify the URI

I tried ProcessMonitor - nada.. I can see which files are opening, but nothing about finding the hidden edge:// URL
