Documents redirect

We currently have our students "Documents" redirect set to redirect to user's home directory, and their home directory is set in AD to map the N drive to their username on a file server. Often, the redirect doesn't take effect, but the N drive is mapped. This ends up with students saving work in the "Documents" folder they see which is actually local to the device because the redirect didn't work. This then of course means next lesson they can't find their work because they've picked up a different laptop.

 

Any suggestions please? If I simply redirect "Documents" to "N:" is it any more likely to work?

I'd have thought redirecting to a mapped drive would be more problematic as the policy could wind up trying to apply before the drive is mapped (this definitely happens in our environment, but YMMV). Although it might be worth a go.

Are you getting anything useful in event viewer (the Windows>Application event logs are pretty good for Folder Redirection stuff)? If you run Group Policy Results, does it show the Redirect policy applying?

More often than not, I've found redirect problems are caused by permissions.

The other one I've had before are policy conflicts. The last place I worked the folder redirects only worked if they were in their own GPO without any other settings (never really got to the bottom of that one).

We used to have this issue, not 100% what I did to stop it, but have got theys settings in GPO:

 

User > Policies > Windows Settings > Folder Redirection > Documents:

Settings "Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location"

Target "Redirect to the user's home directory"

 

User > Preferences > Windows Settings > Folders:

 

Action: Update

Path: %UserProfile%\Documents

Attributes:

Read-Only - Enable

Hidden - Enable

 

(have also got: Contacts, Desktop, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Music, Pictures, Saved Games and Videos all set to the same thing)

I also thought that redirecting to a mapped drive could potentially cause more issues for the same reasons you say.

Group policy results wizard and the event log tell me everything is fine.

I've ruled out permissions as the N drive is mapping.

"User > Policies > Windows Settings > Folder Redirection > Documents:" is set the same as you state.

I have nothing at all set in "User > Preferences > Windows Settings > Folders:" as the drive is mapped by setting it as the Home folder in AD.

We have got "User > Preferences > Windows Settings > Folders:" set as this hids and stops the local profile folders from being shown.

This stops them from being able to save into the local documents folder.

Would you share a screenshot of how that screen is set to hide folders please? I've never played with those settings before.
