Upgrading to 2012 R2 Error

I have an old 2008 R2 server which I'd like to keep going for a bit longer and want to upgrade to 2012 R2. Long story behind it, I know pros and cons, etc. It is a virtual machine running on a Hyper V server. I have given it the ISO as a "DVD Drive" and I have copied the contents of the disc it's local drive but both times it gets so far through the upgrade and then says;

 

Windows cannot install required files. Network problems may be preventing Windows from accessing the file. Make sure the computer is connected to the network and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070005

 

It doesn't have a network connection at the moment, but why would it need one?

 

Any thoughts please?

Perhaps the upgrade is looking to download something from windows update and needs to connect to it?

One of the first things the upgrade asks is whether it should check for updates, to which I answer no. I'm not saying "So it isn't" though as when did Microsoft stuff make sense.....?

I've restored a backup of it to a temporary place so I can test whether the upgrade will work before I do it to the actual server. I can't connect it as the live server exists too.

As it's the holidays, I've just tried again on the live-connected-to-the-internet server (knowing I have a reliable backup to restore to if necessary) and it still says the same thing!

Any specific non-standard AV/anti-malware etc installed on it? It shouldn't need internet access unless you're checking for updates (but that error is network access not internet from what you said). Normally it's something that's blocking access to said files or permissions for those kind of error codes

It's running Sophos which doesn't like 2008 and is why I'm trying to upgrade, but that's it.

 

I have, however, just thought of checking it's system proxy. It is set correctly in IE but not if I type netsh winhttp show proxy. I've now set that too and will try again later. There's people using it now..... Wish I'd thought of that earlier!!

Well that made no difference. It doesn't seem to matter what I do, this complains about network problems even though it's installing off a local disc.

Just a thought and knowing how vague MS error messages are....

It could well be something else entirely as Error code: 0x80070005 as a quick Google suggests it might be more of a generic 'Access Denied' error...

 

Of course it might be 'denied access' to the network... but it might be worth just looking at it from another viewpoint?

 

Added complications from being a VM (virtual network adapter)? It might ignore any connect to the internet instructions for most things, but an upgrade to the OS it might need to get certain files still (which is different to updates)?

 

Could you spin up another VM on the same machine and see if it does a fresh install?

 

Also, if it's running Sophos all bets are off as that might be 'protecting' certain files....

 

Actually, I'm sure you've suspended it, but I've just asked a question about Sophos and it seems it is well known for stopping upgrades.

I had tried various other things regarding permissions and what-have-you as well as I'd seen similar to what you've found when Googling, but got nowhere. I think on my restored copy of the server, I will uninstall Sophos and try again. Thanks.

How are you presenting the ISO? Are you doing it from within the VM or from the host/share?

 

When I did 2012r2 to 2019 I found I have to copy the iso to the VM and open the ISO from with in VM. Annoyed me slightly as shouldn’t have to do that.

I copied the ISO to the Hyper V host, and then inserted it in to the VMs DVD drive. I also tried copying it to the VMs local C drive, and running it from a mapped drive.

Solved it. Not enough disk space, although why it didn't just say that I don't know!

 

Oh yes I do, it's a Microsoft error message.......... Still could have been worse, it could have been a Capita error message!
